Top 7 American Romantic Getaways of 2016

Once you start a family, I have found that romantic getaways become fewer and farther in between.  My sweet daughter had just turned one, and I was pregnant with the second baby (which happened to be a boy yay!), so my husband and I decided it was the perfect time to escape for a long weekend to relax, reconnect, and have some fun before the second wave of craziness entered our lives.

That is why, when I started planning my yearly romantic escape with my husband, I took this task extremely serious. It is not as easy as before the kids to pack up and leave, but we decided to make an effort to go on two trips every year where it is just the two of us: One within the US and the second one to an exotic country. Hey, having tots doesn’t mean you can’t have fun without them!

I carefully picked a list of 7 ah-ma-zing properties in the US that I knew was going to have perfect service, superb food, chic decor, the spa was going to have rave reviews, and the location was going to be easy to get to. I was not going to take any chances on my one and only trip!

After careful deliberation, I decided to not only book one, but book several throughout the year, so my one and only trip turned into five, ha!

Find below the top 7 romantic hotels for a quick getaway in the US:

Glenmere Mansion

Built in the Gilded Age of America, this 150-acre estate used to be the playground to one of the richest families in America. Now opened at a luxury estate hotel & spa, very minimal work was done to the original estate to keep it as authentic as possible, with just a few modern twists. Perfect, for the seasoned and discerned traveler, Glenmere Mansion combines traditional luxury with outstanding service.

Top Family Friendly Vacation Rentals

Until a friend told me about Kid & Coe, I always thought starting an Airbnb company that focused on kid friendly rentals would be a million dollar idea. Well, I guess someone thought about the same thing, just a few years before.

This brilliant company is every jet set parents dream. It is basically stylish apartments for rent around the world that are completely equipped to receive anything from newborn babies to teenagers. The apartments have fully setup nurseries, adorable toddler rooms, cool bunk rooms and chic master rooms for the parents.

The biggest burden for jetsetters is to keep traveling at the same level after the kiddos arrive. Everything seems more complicated: Flying to your destination, booking connecting rooms at hotels, requesting cribs, highchairs, baby proofing the hotel rooms to mention a few. Well, with Kid & Coe you will not have to do any of the above anymore. Arriving to a place where everything you need is ready for you and your kiddos will be your new normal.

Kudos to Kid & Coe!

Travel Tip: How to Cancel your Trip Due To The Zika Virus

The quickly spreading Zika virus has everyone a little worried- and rightfully so. With that being said, 80% of people living in The Americas may contract the virus and never know they had it, only 20% show symptoms such as a rash or fever. The problem with the virus is that it is suspected to be directly correlated with a birth defect in newborn babies called microcephaly. The CDC has issued a warning for all pregnant women to cancel their vacation plans to the affected areas to prevent their exposure to harmful mosquitos that may be carrying the virus.

However, cancelling travel plans last minute may result in a loss of your travel costs, even with travel warnings in place many airlines and hotels are not offering refunds. Here are our top tips on how to get back up to 75% of your travel budget if you have decided to cancel your travel plans due to the Zika virus.

Talk to your Travel Agent

Since your travel Agent has special relationships with the hotels and their management, it is likely they will be able to get you the best possible refund on a reservation cancellation. However, many hotels only offer refunds on a case-by-case basis. If you’re not pregnant  or trying to get pregnant and you’re canceling your trip, it will be much more difficult to get a refund. The Travel Industry does realize the panic associated with this quickly spreading virus and often will do their best to help you rearrange your stay.

Speak to someone at your Airline over the phone

Most Domestic Airline carriers are offering provisional refunds on flights to Zika-affected areas. American Airlines is offering free cancellations to certain places on the CDC watch-list and Delta has a cutoff of February 29 for fee-free itinerary changes. However these are just limited options to the many people around the world traveling, which is why it is best to call the airline directly to solve the problem. More likely you will be able to appeal to their humanity and reservations agents will pull special strings.

Got Travel Insurance?

Did you purchase travel insurance before your trip but are unsure if your claim will cover the cancellation costs? If you have a “cancellation for any reason” clause, you are in serious luck. If you do not have this luxury, call your travel insurance company (talk to someone directly) and ask if a change of heart is a reasonable excuse for cancellation. If there’s a direct government warning against traveling to that country that also counts as a viable excuse.

Fighting Back: My Postpartum Journey

Isabella Louise5

It’s Monday, July 1, 2015 and, today, I finally see the light.

As I write this, I am still unsure whether it’s too soon to tell my story, but I promised myself that once I felt better, I would share my experience in the hopes that it might help someone going through the same situation.

The morning of April 13, nearly three months ago, I woke up feeling odd—not my usual self. Little did I know, it was the beginning of my journey through postpartum anxiety.

My life has always been an incredible one. I have an unbelievably loving family—whose support enabled me to achieve anything I set my mind to—unconditional friends, endless opportunities and a great education. I have always been extremely lucky. In other words, I didn’t have a complaint in the world. I could only thank God and my family for growing up in such a privileged way.

My daughter was born February 18th, 2015, and my already happy life was complete. My incredible husband was by my side through the painful and intense labor, and that night, at 10:38pm, we both sat in awe at what we had created together.

Those first two months were more than perfect; they were nirvana. My husband and I were more in love than ever, our beautiful baby was healthy, and we couldn’t ask for anything more. On paper, I had it all. People would approach me with, “you don’t look like you just had a baby,” “you’re glowing,” and “you look more rested than before.” I truly had the best pregnancy and postpartum experience anyone could wish for.

But at 4:00am on that fateful April 13th, I was startled out of bed with the image of something terrifying happening to me. I thought it was just a nightmare, but that entire day I felt “off” and a little down. My husband had just had a medical scare a few days before, almost fainting due to low blood sugar (he has Type 1 Diabetes) and motherly apprehension came rushing to my brain all of a sudden—what if my daughter gets diabetes?

I got pregnant knowing that my baby had a higher chance of getting Type 1 Diabetes, but it never really bothered me, as the chances are very low. But for some reason, on that particular day, it actually felt like a real threat for the first time. I later learned that that event was the trigger to my postpartum anxiety/depression.

My mind began conjuring up images of horrible things happening to Isabella and I as the days went by. They became so horrific, so debilitating, that at one point, I felt like I wasn’t going to make it to the next morning.

I have always been very even-keeled and, thankfully, never struggled with mental illness before. I guess this was the reason I was even more afraid of what was going on—this was so foreign to me, and I was scared for my life.

The vivid images became more and more common, and worse by the second. I would wake up drenched in sweat, unable to stop shaking, wanting to scrub the images from my head.

I made an appointment with a psychologist and explained what I was going through. I realized at my lowest point of desperation, exhaustion and pure fright that she didn’t know how to treat what I had: Postpartum Anxiety and Depression. Finally seeking help and it not working out was so overwhelming; that I just felt like my life was about to end.

Questions started rushing through my mind.

How did a sweet and loving mother become a person I didn’t recognize overnight?

How was I going to keep my company afloat?

How was I going to take care of my baby?

How was I going to change her diapers?

How was I going to continue being the wife I loved being?

How was I going to be the supportive friend I had always been?

I felt like an alien had taken over my brain, and I had no control over it.

My fears ranged from being put away in a mental institution, leaving my daughter without a mother, to horrific things happening to the baby and me.

I could not watch the news, see people struggling with mental illness walking the streets, listen to sad stories, or even look at billboards that had any words with a negative connotation on them. The tiniest thing could trigger my anxiety and panic attacks.

My husband found a psychologist that specialized in women’s mental health, and I finally saw the light at the end of the tunnel. I learned I was suffering from a hormone imbalance that was causing a very common disorder called Postpartum Anxiety, which falls under the umbrella of Postpartum Depression. It was a relief to know that there was a name for what I was going through, even though the panic and anxiety didn’t go away.

After my first session, I learned that having a baby usually triggers thoughts about the fragility of life. For the first time, I was responsible for another human being’s life, so my brain was playing out the scenarios that I feared the most. That, along with my husband’s health scare, decreased my levels of Serotonin (the hormone known to make you happy), leading to the perfect storm inside my brain.

My world had changed so drastically after having my baby, that only until two months after giving birth did my brain begin to cope with the incredibly daunting responsibility of keeping my baby safe—and with the idea that even a little mistake might cost me my daughter’s life.

My OBGYN reassured me that it was temporary and extremely common, affecting more than 30% of new moms. The reason I hadn’t heard much about it, was that it’s still an apparently taboo subject that many women prefer to keep private. That was the moment I promised myself I was going to share my story; to help other women understand that this doesn’t mean you are weak, and it by no means should make you feel guilty or like you’ve failed. On the contrary, it is something out of your control, because it’s a hormone imbalance. But, with the appropriate help, this will pass and you will be your normal self again.

My doctor recommended I start Zoloft, a common antidepressant for pregnant and nursing mothers, to balance everything out again. In the beginning, I was hesitant about taking any kind of drug, given that I was breastfeeding. But later, I understood that if I wasn’t feeling okay, I could never be okay with others. Mom comes first, family second. And so, I decided to start.

I suffered through three months of pure agony, but in hindsight, I am glad that I went through this, because it made me a more understanding and appreciative person. I see every morning that I open my eyes as a gift, and I do not take my days for granted anymore. Instead, I choose to enjoy every second of it and help others understand that this is a common disorder and, again, it will pass. You will get through it.

And so I circle back to my ultimate passion, and the reason you are reading this post: Travel! Traveling, among other things, was a big part of what helped me to get over those challenging months.  I decided to go to The Golden Door Spa to get out of the everyday routine. Planning a trip to a place I knew I was going to be pampered and catch up on sleep got me excited and helped me immensely.

They say sleep, massages, exercise routines, talking about your struggle and healthy meals are usually the best ways to get over anxiety or depression, so that is exactly what I did.

After my stay at Golden Door, I researched the top 5 spas in the U.S. that are ideal to clear your mind and help you work on your mental and physical wellness. Most of these spas have a weekly plan to get you in shape with trainers, psychologist and sometimes psychiatrists:

Traveling Overseas With a Baby

Before my European summer trip with my 5-month old baby, I was a nerve wreck. Questions started rushing through my brain: How will I pull this off by myself? How will the baby adjust to the new time change? Will she be jet-lagged? Will she scream the entire flight? What if she gets sick in a foreign country?

These fears started weeks before my departure date and did not stop until the moment we took off. The anticipation of the trip was so stressful that I almost canceled the trip, however, I am glad I didn’t because it was the best trip of my life.

This trip was a great way to master the art of international travel with a baby, and will hopefully help you master it as well.

Find below the 9 steps that helped make my trip a success:

1. Change the sleep schedule the night before:

The day before my 11-hour flight, I changed my baby’s schedule slightly to prepare her for the time difference. My flight was at 4:00pm and I was going to be landing at 6:00am the following day. I wanted the flight time to be turned into her bedtime so by the time we landed it would essentially be her wake-up time. I was traveling to the South of France and the time difference was 6 hours. This is how I did it:

A) I put her to bed around 4:00pm and woke her up at 4:00am (10am in the South of France) in order to ease her into the new schedule.

B) I fed her breakfast at 4:00am so by 4:00pm she could have her dinner and sleep during the flight. This worked wonders! By the time we landed, she had slept 10 hours and was ready to go.

IMG_8960

2. Change her sleep schedule during the trip:

Since dinners usually tend to be later in Europe, I decided to change her 6:00pm-6:00am sleep schedule to 12:00am-12:00pm. This was a great idea because we both slept in until noon every day and would go to sleep until midnight, meaning we didn’t miss any of the fun dinners, and the best part? Both my baby and I were well rested every “morning”. *This sleep schedule was also ideal because in theory her bedtime didn’t change at all, 6:00pm in Dallas was 12:00am in St Tropez.

image2-1

3. Travel light:

The amount of gear you need to travel with when you have a baby multiplies x 10. Since I was traveling alone and I had rented a house on Airbnb, it meant I had to take everything myself. I sadly didn’t have a hotel concierge to get things ready for me in advance. However, I decided to be practical and shipped everything to the apartment before my arrival.

First off, I purchased a cheap assembled crib and sent it to the apartment. I rented a car with a car seat, I shipped via Amazon a baby bathtub, a bouncer and diapers. This ended up being about $300 total, but it was well worth it. It saved my back from carrying four suitcases across Europe.

image4

4. Stroller:

I am all about aesthetics, which means an umbrella stroller was not going to cut it for me. I wanted to buy a light stroller I could check at the gate, but a durable and pretty one as well. As I usually do, I did my 27-hour research and found that Bugaboo Bee was the best and most stylish option out there for traveling. It folds with one click and it has a big basket for all your shopping bags and purse.

image1-1

5. Ideal Airplane Seat:

Up until recently if you were traveling with an infant and you were not seated in a bassinet friendly seat, or purchased a seat for your baby, it meant you had to basically hold your baby in YOUR LAP for 10 hours. However, this is no longer true, you just need to have a seat in front of you for Flye Baby to work. This amazing travel baby gear (although not FAA approved yet) is a sort of a hammock that ties to the front seat all the way down to your waist, creating a little cocoon for your baby to sleep in. The use during take off and landing is prohibited.

Screen Shot 2015-08-07 at 5.53.54 PM

6. Gifts every 30-minutes:

Some moms might think this is bribery in it’s purest from, which it is, and it actually works wonders for toddlers. My sister-in-law used to do this with her twin girls every flight, and I now live by it. Buy cheap toys and healthy sweets. Wrap each of them individually with a LOT of tape and a bow. Every 30-minutes give them one and let them unwrap it, they will LOVE IT. Kids will be so entertained that the flight will fly by, and you will be landing before you know it.

7. Post-its:

Want to entertain a child for 10 straight hours? Give them a full stack of post-it and colors. This might seem like nothing special to adults, but kids LOVE this. They might have 350 post-it all around their seat by the time you land, but it is a great way to entertain them and easy for the parents to clean up.

8. Apologize in advance:

This has to be the best advice I have received from new mommies. Make in advance little Sorry Bags and bring them with you to the flight. Write a note inside apologizing for the loud noises your baby might make, together with cheap headphones, chocolates and other goodies that you might think people would appreciate. Once people take their seats, start handing them out to the passengers in front, next to and behind you. This way hopefully no one will give you evil eyes if your little angel throws a fit. You will quickly realize that when traveling with an infant the personnel at the airports are always super helpful, while your fellow passengers are usually your enemies. Some passengers tend to forget they were kids once.

9. Diaper Bag Essentials:

Make sure you pack Infant Tylenol, a thermometer, extra diapers and a extra change of clothes in case of an accident.

*Last but not least, pray that your baby doesn’t decide to throw a fit out of the blue.

How to Travel While Pumping

unnamed

Traveling sans your newborn baby is tough, but what makes it tougher is traveling and pumping so your milk production doesn’t decrease when you get home.

When I decided to travel to Morocco in order to feature it on Posh Voyage, I was 8 months pregnant. My husband and I decided to book and pay for our trip in advance to force us to have a little romantic getaway 4 months after our baby was born (highly recommend it for all new parents). Although the thought of leaving your sweet angel is daunting, it is also extremely important to allow time for the parents to reconnect and catch up on sleep.

Since the day Isabella Louise was born, I started pumping to make my stash of breast milk for my 10 day trip. It took me about 3 months to save up 350oz of milk for my parents to feed my sweet baby while I was gone.

I decided to try to breastfeed for at least 6 months, which meant I needed to pump during my entire Morocco trip. However, little did I know that meant I had to pump in airplanes, taxi rides, hotel rooms, airports, in a wedding and in the middle of the Sahara Desert.

If you are pregnant or a nursing mom, find below a list of what to buy, what to do and what not to do during your next trip.

To buy:

1. Kiinde Breastmilk Storage Bags: These are the best quality bags and perfect for storing milk for a long time.

2. AO Breastmilk Cooler: Although it is not aesthetically beautiful, it is the best quality cooler with the strongest insulation.

3. Medela Breast Pump: Best and most popular pump in the market. Your insurance company might cover the cost.

A) Medela Power Adapter: First mistake, I didn’t bring an extra one and as soon as I connected the power adapter to a foreign outlet, it stopped working.

B) Battery pack: This is what I used the most given that I was pumping on the go most of the time.

C) AA Batteries: Bring at least 8 extra batteries in the event that you run out, the last thing you want to do is to have to find batteries in a country where you don’t speak the language.

D) Manual Medela Breast Pumps: Bring TWO in case your electric pump gives up on you and you are forced to do it manually, at least it will take you 30 min and not 1 hour every time you need to pump.

D) Medela Lighter Adapter: Ideal when you need to pump during a car ride and you do not want to use up your batteries.

4. JL Ice packs:  Great while traveling in between hotels, you want to keep the milk cold and you do not have access to a freezer.

5. Nursing Cover: I love black covers because most people won’t notice what you are doing.

6. Outlet Adapter: Perfect for every trip, pumping or not.

Do:

1. As soon as you check in to the hotel, ask them to put the milk in your cooler in the hotel freezer. Go with them to ensure they actually put it in the freezer and not in the fridge. I trusted my bellboy to do what I asked, but my request got lost in translation and they put the milk in the fridge, meaning it unfroze and had to toss it after I checked out. I was livid!

2. At night, put your pumped milk in your minibar fridge until the next morning when you can ask someone to add it to your frozen stash.

3. Make sure you have an adapter so you can connect your pump anywhere. (My Medela power adapter stopped working out of nowhere so I had to rely on my battery pack, this literally saved my life).

4. During your layover, ask for a family restroom, they usually have outlets so you can pump privately. Sadly in the London Gatwick Airport they did not have one, so I was forced to pump in the entrance of the lady’s room given that they only had one outlet.

5. Check your milk cooler if traveling in the UK. The rule changes from country to country, but I thought everyone had the same rules as the United States, which is that you can travel with unlimited amount of milk in your carry-on. I went through security in London Heathrow and they said that if I didn’t have the baby with me, I was not allowed to bring it on-board with me. This almost cost us our flight given that we had to run back, check the bag and sprint to the airplane.

Don’t:

1. If you are checking out of a hotel, make sure you pump right before you leave. This way you won’t have to pump in awkward places like in a taxi or a train (I learned this lesson too late).

2. Do not forget to ask for your milk before you depart the hotel. Sounds obvious, but you would be amazed at the amount of people that forget the milk.

3. As soon as you check-in, do not forget to give them your frozen milk. Once it unfreezes you cannot freeze it again. If it unfreezes you need to use it in less than 7 days if it is kept refrigerated, and 4-6 hours if it’s kept in room temperature. So it is important to keep it frozen if you do not intend to use it during your trip.

4. Never check your milk cooler if you are traveling in and out of a country that allows you to bring the milk on board. You do not want to risk losing the precious cargo. Check with your airline and airport before traveling.

How to Get Your Baby a Passport

One of the biggest hassles of travel is making sure your travel and legal forms are updated and not within the expiring time.  It is a necessary but a complete bore because unless I check with a client about their Travel Visa or passport, there is a chance they won’t be allowed to fly. Your passport must be valid for 6 months prior to your last travel date and some countries require a Visa upon arrival- but no one is there to tell you if you plan the trip yourself.

Getting your child a passport under the age of 16 is called a minor passport. It is only valid for 5 years but is much easier to get. If your child is over one year old, he or she is going to need a passport to travel.  Here are our tips for getting through this stick-in-the-mud process of getting a passport as quick and painless as possible.

Have your forms ready

You will need:

  • A completed DS-11 form- This is used for the first time you apply AND if you renew your child’s passport while they are still a minor. A child’s passport is only good for 5 years.
  • Birth certificate (Long Form)
  • Both parents present at application – if one parent can’t be there – you will need a form DS 3053 that is notarized.
  • Parent’s identification
  • If you are renewing your child’s passport you must bring the old passport but you CANNOT USE A RENEWAL FORM – you must use the DS 11

Photo

Don’t make this application more complicated than it needs to be, take your baby’s photo at the Post Office instead of somewhere else. The Post Office will take the right sized photo.

Make an appointment at your local Post Office. If it’s a busy travel season, there’s a chance there will be a long line of families trying to get their children their first-or new- passport. One time, I spent 4 hours at the Post Office because my mother didn’t come with the necessary documentation already filled out and there was a long line of rushed mothers just like her.

Get it Expedited

A routine passport takes 4-6 weeks to get to you, so you have to plan ahead.  An expedited passport takes about 3 weeks and, if you expedite your passport at a passport agency, it only take 24 hours!!  There is an extra fee you will have to pay for this, but in the end, peace of mind is free.

Best Baby-moon Destinations

Being pregnant is a wonderful experience in your life, you and your partner are bringing life into the world so why not celebrate that? As baby-moons become increasingly popular, the perfect destination becomes seemingly harder to discover. The perfect destination has to be relaxing, romantic, secluded, and easy to get to, because traveling pregnant is always a hassle (for what to pack when pregnant, check out our article!).

Here are our top picks for the best baby-moon destinations, all of which have direct flights to the nearest airport from many major cities across the country.

Located on the Caribbean side of Mexico, in the lesser-known but still magical city of Tulum, lies Coqui Coqui. This hotel is the most rustic of the options, but still gorgeous. Its also so exclusive, it doesn’t even have it’s own website and is one of the best-kept secrets in Mexico. The hotel boasts beachfront limestone structures with a stunning double exposed spa and breezy bedrooms. Located just outside of the nearby ruins of Tulum, Coqui Coqui offers an unforgettable Caribbean experience. Opt for the Jungle or Beach Rooms.

Necker Island

If you are craving the utmost is privacy and seclusion, Necker Island is definitely the place for you? No budget, no problem! Located on it’s own private island, 30-minutes by boat from Beef Island Airport, this hotel is owned by the super-cool Virgin Limited Edition.  You have the option of renting out the whole island or just a room, either way the hotel staff is dedicated solely to you. The restaurants are amazing, there is even a floating sushi bar, and you will never get bored on this small island. There is an abundance of wildlife, so if you’re an animal lover, you can go out and feed the lemurs and turtles. Stay in the Bali House, they have a required 7-night stay but you’ll be wanting to stay even longer by the end of it!

One&Only Ocean Club

Usually, when I picture Nassau or the Bahamas, I think spring breakers and places I would definitely not consider staying. But the One&Only Ocean Club, located 30-minutes from Nassau Airport, is not that. Once the private estate of A&P heir, Huntington Hartford II, is now a colonial-style beachfront resort. The ambience and style is the glamour of the 1920’s era. One&Only Ocean Club is a playground of world-class golf, tennis, spa, and of course, water-sports. The best part about the hotel is that it is the easiest hotel to get to, with direct flights to Nassau from all over the country and yet you are still transported to a tropical place. The hotel is split into the Crescent Wing, Hartford Wing, and Cottages & Villas. My favorite room to stay in is at the Crescent Wing in one of their Luxury beachfront Suites.

Also one of the most easily accessible, Parrot Cay by COMO is a 30-minute boat ride from the Providenciales Docks in the Turks & Caicos. Located on it’s own island in the Caribbean, the white sandy beaches and clear blue waters are sure to blow you away. Your trip to Parrot Cay would be filled with amazing food, snorkeling, and daily yoga. Arrange trips to other islands such as Iguana Island or Big Cay to feed the stingrays. The body care treatments at COMO Shambhala Retreat at Parrot Cay are among the most indulgent in the Turks and Caicos. Designed to relax and renew, these treatments will leave you feeling refreshed from head to toe. Stay in the One-bedroom Beach Villa and you will not only have your own private pool to play in, you have private beach access and a personal butler!

Traveling Pregnant

Since I became pregnant last June, my traveling schedule did not stop for a second, on the contrary, I traveled twice as much due to fact that I had to cram in all my trips I had planned for the next 1.5 years in less than 8 months.

Traveling the world during my entire pregnancy was exciting, but it took a little more planning than I anticipated. From the exotic coasts of Brazil, to the breathtaking beaches in Hawaii, every trip had to be though-out more carefully. Between the fact that you cannot carry your heavy bags on your own, and that your prenatal vitamins need to be with you at all times, traveling alone and pregnant might seem like a scary thought.

In order to make every trip easy to manage, I have created a list of all the necessities that every future mommy should pack. These are the things I learned:

Stay hydrated and bring snacks

I have never been a fan of water, but this was probably the most important habit I had to drastically change once I found out I was pregnant. You might not be eating for two, but you are definitely hydrating for two. According to the American Pregnancy Association, pregnant women should drink eight to twelve glasses of water per day in order to ensure that their amniotic fluid is renewed and breast milk production is on track, among other health benefits. Remember that flying dehydrates you, so make sure you drink a bit more than you think you need. Don’t forget to stock up on plenty of water in the the airport store and try to bring some healthy snacks to resist the urge of buying out the newsstand’s candy bar selection. Our favorites: dehydrated fruit strips, almonds, and pita chips + hummus.

Exit row

I have luckily reached the status with American Airlines where if I do not get the upgrade to business I get placed on an exit row for extra leg room. This was a great alternative until I realized that pregnant women cannot sit in an exit row. When the gate agent realized I was pregnant, I started getting the worst seats on the plane because by the time I had checked in, all the good seats had be already taken. If you are pregnant and showing, make sure you check-in online 24 hours before and choose an aisle seat towards the front of the plane. Remember that when pregnant, you visit the lavatories much more often.

Permission to travel

All airlines recommend that you consult your doctor before traveling at any point in your pregnancy. My airline said that in order to play it safe, I should get a “permission-to-travel” letter from my doctor. Honestly none of the airlines I traveled with asked me for this. My doctor mentioned that unless you have a huge belly, which I never had, you will be asked for this letter.  If you think your belly is big compared to others, take the letter from your doctor and take your due date into consideration for the return trip, too. Last thing you want is to be stuck in your vacation destination because you miscalculated the days! Most airlines do not allow you to travel internationally within 30 days of your due date (week 36) and domestic travel within 7 days of your due date (week 39) if expecting one baby. With multiples the rules are different.

Prenatal Vitamins

You should always pack extra prenatal vitamins  bottle in a different bag in case you run out or you lose them. I didn’t follow this rule for the first couple months, and let me just say it was always a disaster to find a pharmacy and try to say prenatal vitamins in either Portuguese or German. When you know you will be needing something as important as this, make your life easier and pack a couple bottles for every trip.

Stay active

As I reached my 7th month, my doctor said that blood clots are very common in pregnant women that sit still for long periods of time. Since I was taking 10 hour flights up until my 8th month (week 35), I had no other choice than to wear ugly compression socks in every flight. No matter how ugly they are, use them because they might save your life. Compression socks keep the blood circulating in your feet and ankles. This will help you avoid blood clots, which can be deadly, and when they captain turns off the seatbelt-fasten sign, get up, take a stroll up and down the aisle, stretch in the bathroom (if you can manage to fit, I am 5’9 and I miraculously did) and pump your feet up and down every hour.

Time your trip

If you’ve had terrible morning sickness during your first trimester, then traveling is probably not for you at this moment. The second trimester (14-27 weeks) may be your best bet for a relaxing baby-moon. By now, your hormones should be giving you an energy boost so you should feel energized and ready to go. Also, try to pick a not so out-of-the-way destination, traveling at altitudes over 12,000 feet can be risky, and you can find exotic beaches and destinations that are only a few hours from your front door. Hint: We love the Villas at Ventanas al Paraiso. Such a romantic and private place for you and your loved one to get some well-deserved alone-time before person #3 comes along.

Take advantage

During my first couple of months I had a high-risk pregnancy, which meant I could not carry anything heavier than 10lbs. This of course was the biggest burden to my hectic travel schedule, but that didn’t stop me. Since telling fellow passengers in the TSA line or while boarding the plane that I had a high-risk pregnancy was a bit uncomfortable, especially when you do not look pregnant, I decided to put an elastic compression band in my arm and without giving my full story, everyone was more than willing to help me out (sneaky, I know).

TSA body scan

In most airports, passengers walk through metal detectors, which use a low-frequency electromagnetic field to look for weapons. At the low levels a metal detector emits, this exposure is considered safe for everyone, including pregnant women. However, there is a new kind of body scan that is becoming more common, the Backscatter. This is the one you need to place your hands above your head. If you see that is the one they are using, request a pat down so you and your baby can stay as safe as possible.

Long-Haul Flights with Kids

This month’s theme comes in the midst of our founder giving birth to her first bambino in February, so we couldn’t think of a better theme than to showcase everything about traveling with the little ones. From tips on how to travel 8 months pregnant and traveling on a long-haul flight with a baby, to the best luxury hotels and cruises for kids. If you have a little one, you won’t want to miss.

This week’s travel tip is all about managing that long-haul flight with young children. We’ve all experienced crying babies on our flights (annoying when it’s not yours), but here are some tips on how to make it less unbearable and even enjoyable for you and the family.

Choose seats strategically

When you are traveling on a long-haul flight, make sure you book the best seat possible, which in this case is the bulkhead when you travel with infants. You can request the bulkhead seats and a bassinet when you book your flight. Remember to check-in early and make sure you reiterate that you need a bassinet because most of the airlines have a first-come, first-served policy regardless if you have a bassinet note in your reservation. If you are traveling with toddlers, make sure to check the seat rating on SeatGuru and find the seats with the most legroom in the back of the plane. You will need to have easy access to the lavatories either to change diapers, take them to the bathroom or ask the stewardess to heat the bottles for you.

*Remember, too, that emergency row seats are not an option when you’re traveling with a baby as you need to be 15 years or older (depending on the airline).

Apologize in advance

This has to be the best advice I have received from new mommies. Make in advance little Sorry Bags and bring them with you to the flight. Write a note inside apologizing for the loud noises your baby might make, together with cheap headphones, chocolates and other goodies that you might think people would appreciate. Once people take their seats, start handing them out  to the passengers in front, next to and behind you. This way hopefully no one will give you evil eyes if your little angel throws a fit.

Diaper Bag Essentials

Make sure you pack Tylenol baby, a thermometer, extra diapers in the event of a delay and an extra change of baby clothes in case of an accident.

Take a late afternoon or evening flight

I’d say the best way to keep a child quiet is have them coincide with a nap time or bed time to have them be asleep during the the flight. That way you also have them waking up jet-lag free and ready for a few day’s activities, then an early night in your cozy hotel bed with room service.

Get them excited!

Chances are, if you get them involved by showing them beautiful photos of the places they will be traveling or cool facts about the destination, they’re going to be very compliant because they want to get there as badly as you do! Disclaimer: this may backfire, there is nothing as wild as an amped-up kid on a tiny airplane.

Bring cards and games

When I was little, I could not fly without a deck of cards. I would not let me poor parents sleep and I’d make them play endless hours of Go-Fish. Another great thing is cross-word puzzles, which I still vigorously play today. Cross-word puzzles are great because it not only teaches children interesting facts about the world, it helps build cooperation in a team setting. I Spy and Where’s Waldo are also two great other books.

Snacks, snacks, snacks

If you are traveling with an infant, make sure you feed the baby during take-off and landing, this will prevent their ears from hurting due to the aircraft’s change in air pressure. For toddlers, most of them eat every hour and meal service is only dolled out every few hours on long-haul flights. Bring healthy snacks low in sugar to make sure it doesn’t get the little ones too amped. For a great list of healthy snacks for kids, check out our healthy eating article.

 Apps

Let’s face it, most kids these days either have some form of iPad or Laptop. However, these devices can often be put to good use when traveling with kids, it entertains them for hours. PBS Kids Video shows clips from children’s favorite shows like Dinosaur Train, Sid the Science Guy, Sesame Street, Curious George, The Electric Company, Martha Speaks and more. Draw and Tell by Duck Duck Moose is an interactive coloring and drawing app with 27 coloring utensils, stickers, and you can even use your voice for a greeting card.
