City Guide: 72 Hours in Mexico City

Considered by The Wall Street Journal as a contender for the world’s greatest food city, DF is finally becoming the epicenter of culinary inspiration. World renown for having the most exotic and ancient spices, Mexican cuisine is now being embraced by the finest artisan markets, and top restaurants around the globe.

After years of reading numerous articles and listening to friends rave about the Mexican haute-cuisine, I decided to have a firsthand experience and I went. Upon my return to the US, I was bewildered at the amount of terrific food I had been missing out on. Eating from street-corner joints and mechanical-stores-turned-restaurant-by-night, to chic Michelin-starred restaurants, I found that they all had a common denominator: the cuisine has “the touch” that you could only find at your Latin grandmother’s home (assuming you have one), and nowhere else.

Mexico City might be considered by many unadventurous travelers as city too big to handle, however, when you get there, you will find it oozes with visitors that have a passion for travel and obsession for good food. Here are the top spots you should sleep at, eat at and visit while in DF.

Thursday:

2:00pm- Check into Mexico City’s finest hotel, Las Alcobas. This 35 guest room hotel features the lavish radiance of warmth and comfort you need after the hustle and bustle of the city. The award winning restaurant and old world healing therapies at The Spa are the key ingredients to make your Mexico City trip unforgettable.

Another favorite is the St. Regis. Resting above the vibrant Paseo de la Reforma, The St. Regis Mexico City is in a prime location for travelers interested in the hustle and bustle. The views are spectacular.

If you’re looking for the trendiest hotel, opt for Condesa DF. The Condesa DF, in Mexico City’s hippie Condesa area, is a youthful, current, and carefully designed luxury boutique hotel that honors the feel of the neighborhood perfectly.

3:00 pm- Grab a quick lunch at Lucas Local. I still dream about their lobster grilled cheese, asparagus salad, ceviche tostadas and manchego fondant.

4:00 pm- Take a quick trip to Casa Azul: One of the favorite museums in Mexico City exhibits the life and work of its most famous artist: Frida Kahlo. You will also learn fascinating stories of Diego Rivera and her house-guest and lover, Leon Trotsky.

9:00 pm– Eat: Dulce Patria makes a work of art out of every dish, this updated Mexican restaurant from Chef Martha Ortiz, adds a joyful twist to the haute Mexican cuisine. The interior of the restaurant has a festive ambiance which you will love. It is also located in Las Alcobas Hotel.

3:00 pm- Grab lunch at Contramar: In Mexico, it is very common to indulge in delicious seafood to cure hangovers, and Contramar is that spot. Often times after lunch, the ambiance is so lively, that you might end up staying there all afternoon, and maybe have dinner as well.

4:30 pm-Visit the world famous Museo Soumaya. Carlos Slim was the force behind it, honoring his late wife Soumaya.

8:30 pm- It’s dinnertime: Eat at Maximo. The Chefs share a passion for local gastronomy, and with this idea, they only use local products and change the menu daily depending on what is available at the local markets.

11:00 pm- Have after-dinner drinks at Gin Gin, Mexico City’s hottest new bar. Their three top drinks are The Golden Fleece, The Golden Acapulco, and the Mexican Acidito Pimms, you can’t go wrong!

Saturday:

10:00 am- Start your day at Rosetta. If you are looking for authentic Italian cuisine, Rosetta is your stop. The rustic design is by the chef’s husband, architect Jaime Serra. Rosetta is small and dim light, with a true tuscan feel.

11:30am- Spend the day at Teotihuacan. The UNESCO World Heritage sits in the Mexico City region, Teotihuacán. It contains some of the largest pre-Columbian pyramids in all of Mexico. Be sure to hire a private driver to make your trip as seemless possible.

screen_shot_2013-01-25_at_3.16.50_pm

4:00pm-  Have lunch at Tori Tori. Talk about nailing the perfect balance between futuristic and Japanese decor. When you walk in, the restaurant might wow you, but wait until you try their food. You will die and come back.screen_shot_2013-01-25_at_2.37.11_pm

If Japanese is not what you’re craving, try Mythos. This Greek restaurant is the hottest restaurant in Mexico City right now!

Lastly, if you want to try a trendy and amazing restaurant, Lazaro in Blanco Colima is the place to go and bump into everyone you might know in town. The old house turned restaurant is as pretty as its food.

8:30pm- Saturday night is the night to splurge on Pujol. It’s now widely thought of as Mexico’s finest restaurant—and the 36th best in the world, according to the scrutinized S. Pellegrino rankings. Chef Olvera, who trained at New York’s Culinary Institute of America before returning home, is the country’s most celebrated chef.

Or try Biko, another Micheli-starred restaurant. The Basque-inspired menu is divided in half—one side traditional Spanish dishes, the other modern interpretations.

10:00PM- Grab dessert at Que Bo. The Chocolateria located in the “centro historico” was awarded the most prestigious international chocolate guide by “Club des Croqueurs de Chocolat! “, which is the largest group of passionate chocolatier professionals worldwide. The prehistoric and pure Mexican cacao gives it a taste so unique; you will want to buy the whole store, or take Chef Castillo home.

10:00 am- Breakfast at Eno. By the famous chef Enrique Olvera.

Gstaad Palace Hotel. Gstaad, Switzerland

So far, the ultimate alpine retreat has proven hard to find. Yes, I have encountered numerous striking mountain hotels, but had not fallen head-over-heels for one in particular…until last week.

In order to be on the top of the list, the hotel needs to offer a mix of unparalleled skiing, superb cuisine, jaw-dropping bedrooms and a cozy yet striking style. Upon visiting Gstaad Palace Hotel, the research of my top resort has come to an end.

Gstaad is best known as the most beautiful winter paradise in Switzerland. They have hundreds of perfectly snowy slopes, various sledge runs, hot-air balloons, snow parks, spectacular hiking routes, and my personal favorite: the most picturesque rustic chalets out there… No wonder this is a favorite ski spot for the European elite.

The hotel is located in a 1913 castle perched over the village, offering staggering views outside and royal-like décor on the inside. Despite the age of the castle, the hotel’s modern amenities make it a hideaway you will never want to leave. I also realized that they undergo renovations twice a year when the hotel closes due to low season.

The spa is located around an open fire, which instantly made it my preferred part of the hotel. The Hammam ritual is a must.

My favorite room has to be the Deluxe Suite, Swiss chalet characterizes the style with a touch of modern details.

The Whiteface Lodge. Whiteface, New York.

Why be at home for the holidays when you can celebrate at a luxury lodge? Think about it… Not have to worry about prepping the turkey 3 days in advance, not have to worry about the decoration, and the best part… not have to worry being stuck cleaning the dishes.

Don’t get me wrong, I love that part of the Holidays too, but there comes a year once in a while where you need a break from all of it, and if you are in need of that break, read carefully to find out where can actually relax and have a truly Merry Christmas.

The Whiteface Lodge in located in the heart of the Adirondacks, making the spot nothing short of a winter wonderland.

The rustic lodge is reminiscent to a winter estate of the Northeast’s most prominent families in the early 1900´s. The charm oozes out of every corner, starting from the festive lobby with infinite Christmas decoration and wood burning fireplaces.

The perfect Christmas day was waking up to a tasty all-American breakfast while listening to Christmas carols in the background, then hitting the Whiteface Mountain slopes for a few hours, before returning to the lodge to sip some delicious hot chocolate by the fire. Upon relaxing, I made my way to the ice skating rink to work my appetite for the most delicious and stress-free Christmas dinner ever.

Post Ranch Inn. Big Sur, California.

Post Ranch Inn is located in a unique setting, on the cliffs of the Pacific Coast Highway, offering staggering views of the California coastline and wine country.

The moment you set foot on Post Ranch, the breeze will awaken your senses and the view will make your eyes sparkle. The romance of the hotel boasts is so intense, that most of the guests are either celebrating their honeymoon or anniversary.

The 39-guestroom Inn is understated yet extremely exclusive. The organic architecture embraces a modern style with a natural twist using stone, wood, and of course glass so the magnificent views stay uninterrupted. This is rustic elegance at its best.

I found that their main objective is to provide the most exquisite organic cuisine, top-notch yoga classes, spa treatments, and extraordinary stargazing with their in-house astronomer.

The Lodge- Verbier, Switzerland.

My favorite Verbier property belongs to Sir Richard Branson, The Lodge. Snuggled amidst the Swiss Alps above the picturesque town of Verbier, this rustic alpine chalet is adorned with modern amenities so you can have a first class experience without sacrificing the charm of a Swiss Chalet.

The staff provides 5 star hotel services while managing to give you just enough space to make you feel right at home. The most memorable moment at this 9 guest-room hotel was walking into the kitchen like it was my own and snacking on delicious warm cookies and hot chocolate.

Great for: Couples, friends and families.

Reason to love: The ice rink in the back of the chalet.

How to get there: Fly into Geneva International Airport (GVA). The lodge is about a 2-hour drive.

There is a Fairmont designated area at the base of the mountain that will take care of your ski gear and heat up your boots to make your experience perfect.

Sonnenalp- Vail, CO.

Vail Mountain, my favorite in the US, keeps me coming back every year. When the Faessler family built the hotel, the mix of the European Bavarian Luxury and the Western comfort made Sonnenalp the preferred hotel among luxury travelers. The all suite hotel with 112 guest-rooms has one of the most popular après ski bars, The Kings Club.

Ideal for: Couples, friends and families.

Reason to love: Serving the largest beer selection in town Pepis Bar feels more Austrian than the Lederhosen. After a few après-ski drinks head to Sweet Basil, which was rated The Most Popular Restaurant in Colorado by Zagat. The truffle and cauliflower bisque is to die for.

Amangani- Jackson Hole, WY.

At first, I wasn’t keen on staying at a property 20 minutes away from the slopes. I’m a ski-in and ski-out kind of girl, but the Amangani changed my once jaded perspective.
Situated in the outskirts of Grand Teton National Park, the Amangani’s location is prime. The chic décor is outstanding; using clean and simple lines, spacious suites and earth tones all around the hotel. It is far away enough to give you the privacy you desire, but close enough to give you your daily dose of excitement.

Great for: Couples, friends and families.

Reason to love: Evening horse-drawn sleigh ride into the National Elk Refuge. Sleighs take guests up the ridge of the butte to reveal panoramic views of the valley. Blankets are provided and dinner follows at The Granary.

Bunga Raya Resort & Island. Gaya Island, Malaysia

Bunga Raya Island Resort and Spa in Malaysia is a rustic tropical resort offering a happy medium between Survivor’s exotic location and a Four Seasons service.

A sensual and exotic location is the best way of describing where Bunga Raya lies. It is a luxurious jewel set on a coral reef island just off the coast of Borneo. The secluded hotel has 48 timbered villas tucked away on a tranquil and hidden bay with white sand beaches on one side and the old virgin jungle on the other.

The most impressive fact is that each private villa is rough hewn and hand-crafted by local tradesmen, terraced into the hillside reflecting the traditional simplicity of their architecture, which blends flawlessly with the comforts and needs of the most sophisticated luxury traveler.

Photographs courtesy of the property.

Belmond Villa San Michele. Fiesole, Italy

The former monastery built in the 15th century, is now an uber luxurious Orient Express hotel nestled on a hilltop amid lush trees, which allows unparalleled views of the vibrant city of Florence.

Every detail of the hotel was pure perfection; from the unmatched luxury and the superb alfresco dining to the warmer-than-your-grandmother service and exquisite architecture, your stay here will be equivalent to excellence.

The 46-guestrooms are exquisitly decorated with antique pieces that represent the history of the architecture, also the bathrooms are enormous with double vanities, shower, deep soaking tub. My favorite room was the hidden Junior Suite in the mountain, which offers the best view hands down.

Photographs courtesy of the property.

Blackberry Farm. Walland, Tennessee

Blackberry Farm is the perfect example of flawless southern hospitality set in a storybook location. Built in 1939 in the idyllic Smoky Mountain foothills, this boutique luxury hotel is located on 6,200 acres of romantic and fog drizzled forest.

This 62 guest-room property is a fully operational farm allowing the chef to make every meal fresh. Everything you will eat is grown, or raised right on site – the rest purchased from local farmers. The accommodations have a sumptuous feel with an exceptional attention to detail. The Farmstead Cottage and Singing Brook Cottage Suite are two of my favorite rooms, the latter offers connecting doors giving the ability to book side-by-side suites, ideal for family or friends traveling together. Also included is your own private golf cart. Farmstead Cottage is a bit more sophisticated, ideal for a city couple who are accustomed to the finer things in life.

Blackberry Farm’s restaurants are widely known for offering some of the freshest food and ingredients around. The restaurants try to create haute cuisine while incorporating locally grown produce indigenous to the Smoky Mountains. In fact, Blackberry Farm has been recognized as the #1 Hotel for Food Lovers from Bon Appetit Magazine. Spend breakfast at the Main House and make your way to the James Beard award-winning restaurant, The Barn.

Blackberry Farm offers a wide array of food & drink activities, not to mention they have their own brewery. The Farm also offers yoga, outdoors activities (which include kayaking and fishing), adventure treks, and will help you plan romantic picnics. After a few days there you might love it so much you’ll be asking for a job application.
