American Express Travel is reporting the forecast for Labor Day 2014: U.S. Open in New York City, sunshine in California, magical adventures in Orlando, with a strong chance of tropical beaches in Maui. American Express Travel has calculated this Labor Day’s top travel destinations and here is the top five!

Located in the Upper East Side, this modern hotel is a great place to stay to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city! The Surrey is known for its luxurious atmosphere and spectacular location. Their rooftop is the perfect way to spend labor day in style. Check out the article on Posh Voyage.

A few of my favorite summer restaurants: Charlie Bird is the new restaurant it-place, Buvette is THE place to brunch, Beautique is another new hot-spot, and grab a cocktail at the rooftop lounge at the Hugo Hotel. Last but not least our top option, Acme.

San Francisco

Where to stay:

San Fran has never been famous for incredible hotels, in fact, there is only one up to our standards,  the gorgeous St. Regis Hotel. Built in 2005, it offers the best in modern luxury: High-tech appliances, highly attentive service, killer spa and an awesome restaurant which is a destination on it’s own.

Mnemba Island. Tanzania

Beyond lodges all over the world are known for their 5-star quality and their 5-star management however, Mnemba Island Lodge gets 6 stars. With only 10 guest cottages, you know that anyone who is blessed enough to be able to stay there is going to be just like you, seeking luxury, privacy, and just a hint of adventure. This is a place where no other toys or gimmicks are needed, just the sapphire ocean, sugarcoated sand, and your significant other. If your dream is to play Robinson Crusoe in the most pampered way then Mnemba Island Lodge is the place for you.

Set on a private island off the northeast tip of Zanzibar, &Beyond Mnemba is an unpretentious paradise in it’s own league. The 10 palm-frond guest bandas are each situated directly on the beach for private (you may have one or two antelope come to visit) sunset views. The sea breeze keeps the bandas cool throughout the day and night, while the rooms are filled with soft, natural fabrics and traditional woodcarvings. Enjoy sunset and ocean views on your private barazas (swhili word for meeting place). That night, enjoy your own light show in the African moonlight while dinner is brought to you on the beach. The staff is uber-friendly and loves to join you at your meals for a drink or some fun conversation. This is something that is true throughout all of the &Beyond lodges, the staff is one-of-a-kind. They are the magic ingredients at Mnemba and their commitment to helping guests’ create long-lasting memories is so genuine.

A day in Mnemba goes a little something like this: at a pre-arranged time, morning tea and breakfast will be delivered right to your banda. One of the best aspects of the lodge is their quality of food. Guests rave about how fresh and delicious everything is for a small island off-coast. Breakfast is then followed by a leisurely walk on the beach or some casual snorkeling. After a brief lunch siesta it’s time to start diving! A short boat ride takes you out to the coral reefs, where you can explore the colorful marine life. If you happen to spot a pod of dolphins, jump right in and swim with these sociable sea creatures. When you get back from your dive, wash off the salt in your private glass beaded shower. Get excited for the succulent seafood dinner that awaits you when you are ready. My favorite thing about this lodge is its ability to make you feel relaxed but stimulated at the same time. If I could have another honeymoon this is where I would go!

Cottar’s 1920s Safari Camp. Kenya

Staying at Cottar’s 1920s camp is like taking a time machine back to the golden age of elegant British safaris. Located on 6,00- acres of private conservancy, the camp is situated right next to the Masai Mara National Reserve, the latest addition to the 7 Wonders of the World. Each tent is covered in rich warm colors and textures, taking luxury safaris to new heights. Staff members will put hot water bottles at the foot of your bed to heat up the chilly nights, just one example of the thoughtfulness of the staff. The camp has ten tents in total. The camp is situated to ensure that tents are private and quiet whether you are traveling with a family or on your honeymoon. What’s truly amazing about the camp is the sincerity and friendliness of the staff and management; it is a rarity that is a breath of fresh air.

One of the new additions to the camp is the Cottar’s Homestead, a private home designed by Calvin and Louise Cottar and built by hand using indigenous and eco-friendly materials. What is great about this home is that it is the only real private luxury home in the Masai Mara, making sure your experience is one-of-a-kind. The home has breathtaking views onto the savannah plains where guests can enjoy the annual wildebeest migration, a spectacle for all. Cottar’s Private Homestead is rented only on an exclusive basis and comes with a dedicated staff of eight people. If and when you come to stay at Cottar’s 1920s Safari Camp, this is the experience I recommend the most!

Cottar’s Camp creates and organizes individually tailored safari experiences, from personalized itineraries to hand-selected safari guides; each expedition will be unique to the next. They aim to provide but the right amount of adventure, adrenaline, elegance, and comfort to their safari trips. The Masai Mara National Reserve is home to the largest concentration of terrestrial animals on the planet, which makes it the most exciting place to go on a safari.

What is also so special about the camp is that they received the Zeitz Foundation’s Global Ecosphere Retreat accreditation, a global recognition for leadership in sustainable tourism. Only ten elite camps in the world are awarded this honor. Cottar’s 1920s camp has made it their mission to not only educate their guests on conservation and sustainability, but also to incorporate it into every aspect of the camp, which is why this camp is easily one of the best safaris in Africa.

Giraffe Manor. Nairobi, Kenya

Picture this: You’re blissfully asleep in your comfy four-post bed. You hear a soft rustle and quiet thump at your window. You look up, there’s a Giraffe staring back at you from the with the expression, ”good, you’re awake, now give me a snack”. Giraffe Manor is one of the only hotels in the world where you can feed a giraffe from you window. The staff is impeccable and so nice they treat you like family. “There is no schedule for anything, because you are at home”, said Barbara Coppel.

The manor is set in 12 acres of private land within 140 acres of indigenous Nairobi forest. The manor itself is made of stone with ivy growing up the sides reminding me of a grand historic 1930’s house. The manor is filled with big brass plumbing, from the shower-head to the doorknob and its beauty has been known to inspire writers from all over the world. Some rooms come with balcony that seem to stretch across the plains—the views are expansive. The giraffes feed from several of the rooms such as Betty, Daisy, Jock, Finch Hatton Suite, Kelly and Helen, however all the rooms are equally magnificent! This manor is perfect for a family safari trip. They really cater to people of all ages and their family rooms can sleep up to 5 people.

Each room boasts art deco pieces and fantastic views. Each room has it’s own distinct personality to match the Giraffe’s own individual personalities. But the most fascinating part of this hotel, aside from its grandeur, is its resident herd of Rothschild Giraffes. They often visit morning and evening during your meals in hope of a little treat before retiring back to their forest sanctuary. During your stay I recommend going to the AFEW Giraffe Centre to learn about these endangered creatures and it also features a guided walking tour.

Giraffe manor also offers sightseeing vehicles to take you on local excursions, including the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, where guests can meet, feed, and even adopt (OMG!!!!) baby elephants. They even had a baby rhino last year. The best time of the year to go would be June, July, and August (their winter). Of all the safaris in the world, this is a truly unique place that must be experienced to grasp all Giraffe Manor has to offer.

Singita Sweni Lodge. South Africa

Aside from the luxury that is truly apparent at this lodge, Singita orchestrates an interdependent relationship between communities, wildlife, and tourism that ensures true sustainability therefore blazing a trail that is rarely achieved anywhere else. Located on 33,000 acres of tranquil and private ground, Singita Sweni Lodge is nestled in the trees of Kruger National Park. This Lodge was designed to be intimate and luxurious while also keeping the African culture alive in every aspect of the Lodge.

There are six one-bedroom suites, each with locally handcrafted art and furniture. The Lodge is modern yet rustic, everything is open-air to give you the feeling that you are connected with the wildlife and that any adventure is possible. One of the most amazing aspects of Singita Sweni Lodge is their spa. They have a holistic and healing approach to their treatments, which can be enjoyed on your private deck or at the spa. Do not miss their two signature treatments Monkey Orange and Ndzi Lorhe Africa, which translates into “I Dreamed of Africa”.

One of the key components of Singita is their collection of wine, including some of the continent’s most sought-after private reserves. Their wine list encompasses approximately 222 labels and 20,000 bottles in the Singita cellars alone. This is an amazing thing for anyone who decides to stay at any of the Singita Lodges because they are all-inclusive (i.e. wine all-day, every-day).

At Singita, there is a never-ending list of activities. One of the most rewarding activities would be visiting The Singita School of Cooking. It is a unique community development program where guests can go and cook traditional dishes taught by local young men and women. Their stargazing safaris are also one-of-a-kind. There is perhaps no more inspiring experience than looking up at a full sky of sparkling stars while being surrounded by wildlife. The must-do activity, of course, is the Game Drives. While nighttime drives reveal the elusive magic of nocturnal Africa, daytime game drives provide the perfect opportunity to get up close to Africa’s incredible animals. During your stay at Singita Kruger National Park, you are likely to spot a great variety of wildlife including elephant, leopard, famously large prides of lion, white and black rhino, buffalo, hippopotamus, cheetah and sable.

Mwiba. Serengeti Plains, Tanzania.

Heard of Mwiba Lodge? No? Well you’re not alone, the lodge is so new and exclusive it doesn’t even have it’s own website yet! Known in circles as the safari lodge where the super-famous go to hide, Mwiba is in a league of it’s own. When you arrive, the staff is there to warmly great you with champagne and hand-towels after your journey to the camp. The camp is so expansive and exclusive; the only thing around seems to be the wildlife. Mwiba Lodge is located on 125,000-acre private wildlife reserve in the heart of the Serengeti Plains and was designed to make you feel as if you have the private reserve all to yourself.

There are only 8 tents, all beautifully identical; the only thing that changes is the view. The tents are sophisticated but understated; however they offer the height of luxury and serenity. The lodge and the tents are situated on the big beautiful Arugusinyai River, so Tents 1 – 4 are low and along the riverbed, while Tents 5 – 8 are higher up on stilts and offer more of a tree house feeling. Anywhere in the world you can eat a meal indoors, so at Mwiba Lodge most meals are eaten outdoors, to truly soak up the atmosphere and wildlife. While the menu varies and caters to each group’s individual needs, it is consistently traditional Western palates, featuring dishes such as butternut squash salad, steak, and a fig tart with a South African Cabernet.

The center of Mwiba is the main lodge. The entrance is set amongst two massive boulders, narrowly set apart, that open up into an elegant and vast space. The view from the main lodge expands miles across the Serengeti Plains. There’s also a stone fireplace, a bar and a separate library accommodating the beautiful main lodge. Coming this close to the great outdoors most people only get to experience through National Geographic. It is awe-inspiring and had me speechless. It is an indescribable feeling seeing an animal so magnificent out in the wild, and something you need to experience for yourself.

All the activities, meals, etc are very flexible and adjustable to each guest’s needs and desires. Because the Lodge is on a private reserve it creates a lot of flexibility within the schedules of each guest. Guests are offered private bush walks (with a well-equipped guide) and night game drives with a spotlight, which in a lot of places are prohibited. Mwiba truly is the way of the future for African safaris. It is the only place in the world that you could dangle your legs in their infinity pool, cocktail in hand, as elephants and zebras come to drink at the springs below. I can honestly say that falling in love at Mwiba Lodge would not be a hard fête.

Six Senses Con Dao. Vietnam

Six Senses Con Dao begs the age-old question, “If I were stranded on a beautiful deserted island…”, in the best way possible. This is one island I would not mind being stranded on (given that it comes with wifi and some fresh sushi). Six Senses wanted Con Dao to be remote, but still accessible. It is a truly breathtaking location and also a marine and national park. National Geographic Traveler rated con Dao one of the top eco-lodges because of their commitment to sustainability.

At Six Senses Con Dao the design is contemporary mixed with the essence of a traditional fishing village. Our favorite room is the very spacious two-level villa with one super comfy bedroom, which is located on the upper floor with magnificent ocean views plus an ensuite bathroom with your very own private infinity-edged swimming pool. The rooms are simplistic but the views are breathtaking.

Authentic Vietnamese cuisine prepared by Miss Lan and her team at Vietnamese at the Market using recipes that have been passed down from mother and grandmother. The Vietnamese kitchen also offers daily specials.  By the Beach is the main restaurant with panoramic ocean views and gentle sea breezes, specializing in locally caught seafood, fruit, vegetables and herbs bursting with flavor while Destination Dining offers barbecues and picnics at any place of your choice.

The best adventure at Con Dao is a 30 minute ride by speedboat that leads to the beautiful island of Bay Canh where the fun begins; a two to two and a half hour trek through the dense forest leads you to one of Con Dao’s most important landmarks. Construction of the Bay Canh Lighthouse was between 1883 and 1885 is located one of the highest points in on Bay Canh island at 226 meters above sea level.

At Con Dao, you can have the utmost romantic vacation or a memorable family vacation, it caters to everyone and molds to whatever kind of trip you are looking for!

Travel tip: Entrusters.

Entrusters is an international shopping and delivery platform, built on trust.  They are disrupting global e-commerce and logistics industries by making all products available to everyone, everywhere at competitive prices.  Certain popular products are unavailable or are prohibitively expensive in many parts of the world. Current solutions are expensive, inefficient or lacking safeguards. That is why Entrusters was created, to connect even the most remote parts of the world. We spoke to the founder of Entrusters and picked his brain.

circle chart

1. So, essentially, Entrusters could get you any product anywhere (if someone responds to the request) using the website?

That is correct – obviously, we narrow that scope a bit to only include products sold from legitimate retailers to avoid illegal products and/or items that could be perceived to be risky for a traveler to carry.  We review all requests before they are published and anything that is questionable (strange or out of the ordinary) is ultimately removed or reviewed further before putting on the marketplace.

2. Do these products include high-end products?

Indeed they do.  Most of the inquiries that we have had up to this point have either been hard to find items for enthusiasts of certain hobbies (ie, fly-fishermen, photographers, chefs, tech nerds) or small electronics (smartphones, tablets, smart watches, etc).  Initially our search functionality was only tied to Amazon which meant that product variety was limited. However, we now have functionality that allows buyers to enter in the URL of the exact product that they want (if it can be purchased online) and then we publish it on the marketplace.  Our hope is that this facilitates the shopping process for buyers looking to purchase clothing and accessories – especially boutique luxury products that many consumers just do not have access to.

3. Which countries will you start with?

We are initially just targeting Argentina, Brasil, and Uruguay since they are countries that we know.  Our idea is to continue to beta test the product here so we can improve it as much as possible before really making the platform truly global.

4. Will you be creating an app to go along with this website for convenience’s sake?

Good question – you seem to have figured out the site 😉  We have this item as a fairly high priority.  At the beginning we will likely only use it to facilitate the meet up between the traveler and the buyer.  At a later stage though we will certainly broaden the scope of the app so that buyers will be able to request products and travelers bid on them via the app.  This can happen now on most smartphones simply using the browsers functionality, but it is clear that mobile is the future so creating a multifunctional app will be important.

5.  I like the idea of a marketplace where people help each other out, how did you come up with this idea?

Well, the genesis of Entrusters goes back to a time when all of us (Founders) lived in Buenos Aires and the tendency for both foreigners and locals was to put in a request for some specific product as soon as anyone learned that a friend was traveling abroad.  I think inherently everyone enjoys doing favors for others, but at the same time picking up product and using precious suitcase space requires quite a bit of effort so the idea of making a bit of money is nice and I do not think it necessarily detract from the good deed.  There will undoubtedly be some travelers that we have that are only focused on the economic benefit, but most travelers we have dealt with feel that the multi-faceted nature of the platform and service resonates – ie, 1) Help a local get the products he or she otherwise could not easily obtain 2) Get some local knowledge of the place you are traveling to when you meet up 3) Make extra cash to reduce the cost of your trip.  Maintaining a sense of community is important to us, and thus it is crucial to make the social aspect as dynamic as possible.

 6. How will you secure that the traveler/buyer is not a scam?

As you could probably judge by our name, “Trust” is at the heart of what we are building.  This has many implications, but one is obviously protecting our users on both side of the transaction from scams and fraudulent activity.  We have quite a few safeguards in place, but the main one is our embedded custodial service whereby we hold the funds of the buyer until the good has been delivered and the buyer has approved that the product he/she received was indeed the product requested.  The buyer confirms this by providing the deliverer with a verification code (assigned to the buyer at the moment of purchase), which is then sent to Entrusters by the traveler.

 7.  Is there commission for the traveler who brings that product?

Indeed there is.  I kind of touched on it in a previous question, but essentially the traveler can set the tip amount that he/she is willing to make the delivery for.   Some people bid as a percentage of cost, while others make bids based on the size and weight of the item.  Others merely bid small amounts, as their main objective is to have the opportunity to meet and help out a local.  Ultimately there is not standard formula, but as more people start using this service, we hope that market forces will help further define prices and ultimately drive them down.

8. Can you review the traveler/buyer?

Yes, that functionality was just incorporated a few weeks ago and allows both buyer and traveler to review each other.  Those scores and remain on the users’ profiles so that others can review them in the future.  The hope is that the more information and transparency we provide, the more efficient and secure the service will be. Right now users can see how many friends they have in common on FB (if both are registered that way) and soon we will incorporate a functionality that allows both sides to see if they share common interests.  At some point we also hope to take this aspect to the next level by allowing users to boost their scores using some sort of “gamification” techniques – this is a bit more complex though so we have a ways to go.

9.  What is the most popular product buyers are requesting right now?

iPhones, tablets, and play-stations and hard-to-find specialty items such as photography materials and collectibles

 10. What is the legal process of having to bring something without having to pay taxes?

This is obviously a question that we get asked a lot, especially by frequent international travelers.  At the end of the day Entrusters is basically a platform connecting people so all we can do is point out (multiple times) during the bidding price that all travelers’ bids need to take into account all additional taxes (US sales tax, tariffs, etc) and costs (mainly shipping if it applies).  We strongly urge all users to do this calculation and to bid accordingly.

 11. Has anyone ever requested something truly scandalous?

Haha, not yet – but I am sure it will come sooner or later.   Maybe depends on your definition of scandalous…?  We did have someone request what appeared to be stripper shoes, but I am slow to criticize people’s fashion.  Will keep you guys posted for future material.

12. Is there anything else exciting or interesting we should know about your company?

Countless things no doubt – but maybe we save them for next time.  One thing that we have been re-iterating is that we see ourselves as part of the “sharing economy” movement – and in our case we ultimately hope to a) help change the way people are traveling by making trips more affordable as well as enriching travelers’ cultural experiences (check out this interesting article about traveling trends of the millennial generation) and b) disrupt the traditional logistics industry, allowing people everywhere to get the products they want (but are not ‘local’) for the best prices

13. What is the advantage that Entrusters has over regular shipping?

The advantage that Entrusters has over regular shipping is mainly price at this stage – although occasionally it is timing as well, an element that will continually improve as our volume of travelers increases.  That said, you have to look at each product and location on a case by case basis as some items may be readily available and cheap in one country and then scarce and significantly more expensive in another.

qualia. Hamilton Island, Australia

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the world’s natural wonders, but can you imaging vacationing in the heart of it? Located on Hamilton Island is the world-class qualia Resort. qualia in Latin means “a collection of deeper sensory experiences” and this resort exemplifies that. Island-inspired architectural sculptures in specimen timbers, sandstone and glass, frame the surrounding landscape of Australian Eucalypts and the Coral Sea. Upon arrival, guests are greeted with a bottle of champagne to start off their trip, indicating that this is strictly a relaxation, no-kids-allowed stay-cation.

The beautiful and secluded rooms are designed to enlighten and relax the senses. The rooms are designed with minimal, yet elegant, style so that your focus is on the ocean and surrounding forest life. Each pavilion faces the water with extraordinary views. However our favorite pavilion is the Windward pavilion because of its private sun deck and infinity-edge plunge pool melting into the Coral Sea.

Treat yourself to dinner at the Long Pavilion, where the ambiance is pure romance thanks to the backlit patio from the sun’s rays. Indulge yourself in Japanese culture as they showcase some of the finest sake matched with fresh Australian sashimi grade fish. For a more relaxed dining experience, Peach Beach pavilion has equally stunning views and some of the best snack food around (hint: try the steak sandwich).

qualia hosts numerous annual events including the annual outdoor performance of the Australian Ballet through the Pas de Deux Weekend in Paradise series, culinary weekends featuring top chefs from Australia as part of the Great Barrier Feast series and the annual Audi Hamilton Island Regatta that takes place every August.

Their spa treatments are thoughtfully designed to rebalance the synergy between mind and body and to capture the essence of Australia and the Great Barrier Reef. The products used have been selected because they embody the Spa qualia ethos, which is to provide a unique Australian experience whilst respecting your health and wellbeing along with their precious environment. If you are weary from your long travels, you must do the Jet Lag Revival treatment, if this can’t help you then I don’t know what will!

North Island. Seychelles

Ever wondered where royalty goes to escape the hoards of paparazzi and enjoy some well-deserved relaxation? Well that would be North Island, 15-minutes from the big island of Mahé. This was also the honeymoon destination of the world’s most darling couple, Prince William and Kate Middleton, which in itself describes the exclusivity and luxury of this private island.

North Island is a sanctuary for those seeking unspoiled beauty and privacy. The whole island is dedicated to the conservation and preservation of their local flora and fauna. With only 11 villas on the island, Seychelles and African craftsmen decorate each home lightly and naturally to convey the essence of the island, beautiful and 100% natural. Our favorite villa would have to be the honeymoon suite because…drum roll please… it comes with its own private beach! What could possibly be better than that?

The Piazza is the natural focal point of the Island, gathered around and beneath a large Indian almond tree. The architecture blends ovals and minimalist lines that lead the eye to the uninterrupted 360-degree views of beach, tree and the inner Island. The island is home to a tortoise and marine sanctuary, just swim a few feet out into the water and you will be greeted by these friendly critters.

The Island’s restaurant is famous for their “no-menu” concept; the chef develops a menu based on your preferences and desires using organic and locally grown or harvested ingredients. To work off that hand-made Wagyu beef burger, cool forest trails are at your disposal or warm seas to dive into. You can also enjoy fishing or kayaking expeditions! An evening cruise complete with an Indian Ocean sunset is the perfect way to finish the day.
