Amankora. Bhutan

There is not place on earth quite like Amankora. Located in Bhutan’s central and western valleys, it consists of five unique lodges linked throughout the Kingdom of Bhutan’s countryside by paths that weave through the natural surroundings.  Made up of mountains that dip into valleys and rivers, Bhutan is a destination unlike anywhere you have ever been, and one you will never want to leave.

The resort is made up of Amankora Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Gangtey and Bumthang – each of which are unique in their own way, but also come together to create the spiritual and welcoming whole that is Amankora.  You can choose to stay at just one, or embark on a tailor-made, 11-night journey throughout Bhutan to see each of the amazing locations of The Amankora Resort. This journey will include complimentary road permits, private transports with a driver and a guide, and a 60-minute massage to be enjoyed at any one of the five lodge-spas. Additionally, decide whether or not to add an all-inclusive package to your stay.

Amankora Paro is located in Balakha Village, a 30 minute trip from Paro International Airport and has 24 suites.  The rooms carry a rustic feel but with contemporary design and have rammed earth walls, wood paneled interiors and slightly sloped roofs.  Suites feature a combined lounge and bedroom with a cozy window seat and a bakhari – a traditional wood burning stove.  The bathrooms are spacious and have a bathtub you will want to sink right in to.  Centered around a beautiful courtyard are the Living Room and Dining Room.  The Living Room has floor-to-ceiling glass windows that look out to a blue pine forest, the 17th-century Drukyel Dzong, and Mount Jhomolhari – this is the perfect place for a cocktail.  The Dining Room, located below the Living Room, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and specializes in Indian, Western and Bhutanese dishes.  This property is also home to the two story luxury Spa Bhutan.  You will arrive in the upper level, which has the lobby, changing areas, sauna, steam room and glass-walled yoga studio. Downstairs has a double treatment room and four single treatment rooms, each of which have a shower and outdoor bath.

Amankora Thimphu has the same amenities, and the window seat looks across a beautiful courtyard, or at a stream that runs through a nearby pine forest.  Close to Bhutan’s capital, sights and shopping, Amankora Thimphu remains a tranquil retreat in the Kingdom.  The Living and Dining Rooms are combined, and the Spa has three treatment rooms, a steam room and a changing area.

Accessed by crossing a suspension bridge over the Mo Chhu (Mother River), Amankora Punakha’s eight suites also feature the same in-room design, but the three buildings that hold the suites are situated in an orange orchard with views of rice paddies and Punakha Valley.  The property was designed around a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse.  Above the Dining Room are relaxation areas and a traditional Bhutanese altar room for prayer and meditation.  This is the perfect place to stay in the summer – the Courtyard is perfect for outdoor dining. It also has a two-story spa with a yoga/meditation room, views of the surrounding rice fields, two private treatment rooms, a steam room and changing areas.

Amankora Gangtey mimics Amankora Thimphu, and looks across the valley.  It is located in the picture-perfect yet relatively unheard of Phobjikha Valley and has gorgeous views of the sweeping valley and the 16th-century Gangtey Goemba Monastery.  The cozy, combined Living and Dining Room has floor-to-ceiling walls that give you amazing views of the valley and surrounding mountains.  The Spa has two treatment rooms and changing areas.

Amankora Bumthang has 16 suites and is accessed through a stone hallway.  The suites are in four separate buildings, with two suites on the ground floor and two above.  The rooms come with the same luxuries as the other four settings, however the daybeds overlook the courtyard and the nearby Wangdichholing Palace and Monastery.   It is located in the town of Jakar in the Choerkhor Valley, which is commonly known as Bumthang.  The lodge is surrounded by an apple orchard, and has pear trees all around the property as well.  The Living Room and Library open after a dzong-inspired hallway and both have lounge chairs, daybeds and a buhkari, like the ones found in each suite.  The Dining Room has an unbelievable ceiling, as well as outdoor dining areas under the shade of fruit trees.  There is also a spa with three treatment rooms and a steam room.
So, if these five lodges’ uniquely tranquil yet stunningly perfect settings don’t scream “Next Stop: Bhutan!”, scroll through the gallery one more time and think again.  Though the options may seem endless, and the task of choosing one daunting, you cannot go wrong with a suite in any of these five spiritual and serene spots.

Mukul Beach Golf & Spa. Nicaragua

At the Mukul Beach, Golf & Spa Resort, the Emerald Coast of Nicaragua is your backyard, and what better place is there to call home than the 1,670 acre private beach community that is Mukul? The resort opened in 2013 and each of its 37 accommodations has its own ocean view, pool, and staff.

Don Carlos Pellas, a Nicaraguan entrepreneur, had his vision come to life with Mukul. Mukul means “secret” in Nicaraguan and Pellas’ goal was to make Mukul among one of the most exclusive and luxurious boutique hotels in the world. The property features 12 one and two bedroom beach villas, which boast nine-foot ceilings and glass walls for an amazing view of Playa Manzanillo. Each room is equipped with the aforementioned private pool, a palapa to enjoy both sun and shade, a wrap-around porch, and a garden with a hidden outdoor shower. The one bedroom is ideal for a romantic getaway, but if you want to bring the family along, the two bedroom suites are equipped with a private kitchen, pantry and living room.

Additionally, Mukul has 23 Bohios nestled into the hillside above Playa Manzanillo. Situated like tree houses, the Bohios offer unbelievable views of the surf and sand, as well as privacy as unique as it comes. Made from sustainable, native teak and pine, the Bohios each have a private wooden deck, a plunge pool, and a shower with a view.

The third accommodation option is the Casona Don Pellas – the epitome of Nicaraguan hospitality. Casona Don Pellas is the Pellas’ family beach home and is open to guests when the family is out of town. The villa is 20,000 square foot indoor and outdoor, spacious living area with an 80-foot high palapa ceiling. It has four bedroom suites, a wrap-around terrace and a private swimming pool. The fact that the family opens up their own home to guests of Mukul shows how sincerely they believe in true hospitality.

You’ll spend your nights at Mukul at the gorgeous, open-air Mukul Beach Club – a sanctuary for guests to enjoy snacks, Flor de Caña Rum cocktails, and a split-level bar and lounge. Eat at the palapa-covered Beach Terrace or at Parilla, where they serve dishes inspired by the Americas and local Nicaraguan cuisine; produce grown by local farmers and a daily catch brought in by Nicaraguan fishermen.

Other amenities include an 18-hole golf course designed by Scottish native David McLay Kidd, which finishes only steps from the waves and sand. Spa Mukul is made up of six casitas, each of which are completely private to enhance guest experiences. At the beach, guests will find surfboards, paddleboards, kayaks, snorkeling gear and water toys.

Mukul is the absolute ideal location in Nicaragua, and if we have not yet given you enough reason to check-in to Mukul, let us add that it’s as luxurious as any boutique location we’re used to, but with half the price point.

Travel Tip: Roatán Island. Honduras

Looking for the next big exotic destination that’s popular amongst celebrities and billionaires alike? Look no further than Roatán Island, the largest of Honduras’ Bay Islands. Perfectly located right next to the largest barrier reef in the Caribbean Sea, Roatán is an  island filled with white-sandy beaches, turquoise waters, mangroves and palm trees, a mostly undiscovered paradise island. It is the perfect place for a undisturbed getaway, and the island features many luxurious accommodation options.

If you’re a golf-lover, Pristine Bay Resort is the place for you. The Resort itself is gorgeous; picture infinity pools over the ocean with Caribbean-minimalist decor. But, the crown jewel of the hotel is situated in the middle of the resort’s 405-acres, The Black Pearl Golf Course. The Black Pearl Golf Course, created by Pete Dye and Roatan’s first and only golf course, is a championship 18-hole, Par 72, 7200 yard course. The course starts at the ocean’s beaches, rises into the island’s rolling foothills, then takes golfers on a wild ride back to the seaside clubhouse.

If you’re looking for a hotel a little more boutique-y and romantic, look no further than Barefoot Cay Resort. Keep in mind you are on a tiny island, because while the decor is minimalist and you will not find butler service around here, your stay will be uninterrupted and immensely private. I recommend the Beachfront Villas, they are brighter, more colorful, and the most luxurious of the three options (not to mention they have private beach entrances).

I saved the best for last Posh Voyagers! Just adjacent to Pristine Bay Resort is Las Verandas Hotel & Villas, arguably is the most luxurious hotel on Roatán. Las Verandas is lucky enough to have access to The Black Pearl Gold Course, so it is perfect for those who value luxury and golf. Las Verandas is currently open with six luxurious villas, eight ocean view hotel rooms, two guest pools, the Palapa Bar and our fine dining restaurant, Las Pergolas. I would recommend staying in one of the Ocean View Villas, but you cannot go wrong here. Even though it only has a 4-star rating, i give it 5-stars in my books.

Travel Tip: Top 5 Travel Books

I love books. Maybe even more so than movies, especially when it comes to traveling. I love books that inspire me, whether it is to travel or to make a positive change in my life. Books can provide hours upon hours of enjoyment and escapism, which is why they are perfect for long flights or trips by yourself.

These are my top 5 favorite books for travel, from a mystery novel that I have to solve like a puzzle, to a book that will inspire me to look past my comfort zone, they are all perfect for the long-haul trip.

1. The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession In The Amazon by David Grann

One of the most exciting non-fiction reads, the story depicts the tale of British explorer Peter Fawcett, who, in 1925, disappeared with his son in the Amazon while looking for an ancient lost city. Over 100 explorers who went in search of the Lost City of Z have disappeared since then. Grann himself made the journey into the Amazon, revealing new evidence about how Fawcett died and showing that Z may have really existed right under his feet.

2. A Walk In The Woods: Rediscovering America on The Appalachian Trail  by Bill Bryson

Another one of my favorite travel writers, Bill Bryson makes me laugh out loud at his writing. The book is filled with humor along with more serious facts about the trail’s sociology, ecology, and a description of the plants, trees, and people around him. Also with him on this adventure is his friend Stephen Katz, this non-fiction is a great read for environmentalists and comedians alike.

A-Walk-in-the-Woods

3. Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain

Anthony Bourdain is one of my favorite travel writers: he is extremely honest, well-spoken, and funny. The first book by Anthony chronicles his personal experiences in the kitchen, as well as humorous anecdotes and his drug-abuse. For those who are fans of his tv show, Parts Unknown, you will love the book of his coming-up in the food world.

4. King Rat by James Clavell

Okay so my opinion about this book is a little biased, but it is an amazing read. Even thought the book is fiction, it is taken from real-life experiences from James Clavell, who was in a Japanese prison camp during World War II. It centers around a man named Peter Marlowe, who is stuck in a prison internment camp in Changi and all the dangers that came with that time period including disease, starvation, and hopelessness. If you were a fan of Unbroken, this book it right up your alley.

5. Into Thin Air: A Personal Account Of  The Mt. Everest Disaster by Jon Krakauer

In the non-fiction book, Jon Krakauer described the events leading up to his eventual decision to participate in an Everest expedition in May 1996. It also details the author’s experience during the “rogue storm” that hit Mt. Everest and killed eight people. This is the kind of compelling book you will absolutely not be able to put down!!

City Guide: 72 Hours in Nantucket

This tiny island off the coast of Cape Cod has been my beloved oasis ever since I have lived in the Northeast. There is something about this pristine place that makes me feel at home although I am 2,000 miles away. All the shingle homes are perfectly aligned with adorable widow walks, delicious lobster shacks along the miniature streets, the local shops with surprisingly beautiful jewelry and the fresh sea-to-table cuisine are a few of the things that makes me fall in love with this place over and over again.

Thursday:

1:00pm- Check-in to The White Elephant Hotel or at the White Elephant Cottages and Residences for a more intimate feel. The cottages and residences are the perfect place to stay if you want to feel at home on the island, the location is unbeatable.

If you want something less expensive, try the oldest Inn in Massachusetts, The Jared Coffin House. The interiors have been completely redone turning it into a typical New England charming Inn with modern amenities.

And since I like to save the best for last, The Wauwinet is hands-down my favorite place to stay in while in Nantucket (for our full article, click here). This home-y yet elegant Inn has is 10 minutes away from tall the hussle and bussle, so perfect for a romantic getaway , and a home run if you want to impress your date.

8:00pm– Dinner at my favorite restaurant, Topper’s. It is located at The Wauwinet Hotel, so if you are not staying there, the 10-minute drive might make you think twice about dining there… well don’t think about it, trust me and just go. The food is self-indulgent and the service is the best in town. Insiders tip: Order the Diver Scallop Ceviche, the Hand Rolled Ricotta Cavatelli and the Butter Poached Lobster.

8:00pm– Dinner at the Company of the Cauldron. I don’t feel I am in Nantucket until dine at this superb restaurant. With an unassuming and cozy environment, this true Nantucket restaurant takes local cuisine to a gourmet level. Keep in mind that the menu is a set menu.

City Guide: 72 Hours in Boston

Spending every summer on Cape Cod since I can remember gave me a chance to experience the best of New England. I’ve always loved Boston (maybe not as much in the winter) because the food is hearty, the weather is warm, and the people are beyond friendly. Some of my favorite childhood memories are in Boston: going to Red Sox games, having my first lobster roll, and taking a family boat ride down the Charles River.

Here are some of my favorite places to eat, see, and do while you’re in Beantown. Although you can’t ever go wrong with the tourist attractions, we’ve added some local secrets to keep you entertained.

Thursday:

1:00pm- Check-in to the XV Beacon, arguably the coolest hotel in Boston, XV Beacon combines 1903 Beaux Arts architecture with a modern design in the heart of downtown Boston. It is my favorite place to stay in this grand old city and I’m sure it’ll be yours too.

Al Bustan Palace. Muscat, Oman

Oman was named one of the top travel destinations of 2015 by Travel + Leisure. Experiencing Oman is like transporting yourself into a scene of Arabian Nights, the women are adorned in silk and jewels and the streets smell of frankincense. With two Anantara properties, a Radisson Blu, an Alila resort in the mountains, and a Kempinski on the way, there will an abundance of luxurious accommodations options that are sure to draw you to the beautiful Oman coastline.

The Al Bustan Palace in Muscat, Oman is our pick for this weeks dreamy destination.  It is a Ritz-Carlton Hotel, so the traditional luxury is guaranteed, with the typical extravagant Middle-Eastern twist.  We know Oman seems like a far-fetched destination, but when you take one look at this property, you will be calling us to book you on the next flight out.

With 198 guest rooms and 52 luxury suites, and walls covered in Arab art and decoration, you will find yourself immersed in local culture, while still inside the walls of a hotel you love and trust.  Oman culture has a tradition of offering coffee anytime a guest is welcomed into a home.  Upon arrival at the Al Bustan Palace, the “coffee man” (the cultural host for the hotel) will greet you with their famous gesture.  The Al Bustan Palace is not only a place to sleep and eat in luxurious elegance, but also to immerse yourself into the fascinating Middle Eastern culture.

Elegance spills over the top at the Al Bustan Palace.  Famous for its magical 38-meter-high domed lobby/entry way, the property is home to its very own, and the longest white-sand beach in the country, five outdoor pools, including a 50-meter long infinity pool.  It sits right in front of the Sea of Oman and its backyard are the Al Hajar Mountains.

Spend your days on the sparkling sea sailing, kayaking and snorkeling, or allow yourself some perfect contentment on a chaise lounge all day long.  With three onsite restaurants and two bars, there is no need to worry about going hungry.  Even better, though, is that the restaurants serve up both international and local flavors.

Calming hues of blue and green highlight their guest rooms that reveal Sea of Oman and mountain views from private balconies. For standard rooms they are remarkably spacious and the Al Bustan Lagoon Room beats out the rest. The highlight of accommodation is their suites. If you have enough Omani rials to shell out, I would recommend staying in Presidential Sea View Suite, it’s like stayin in your own Omani palace.

Dine at the Beach Pavilion and you will find yourself directly on the sand in front of one of the most scenic views in all of Oman.  Request a private cabana for a romantic occasion and seaside treat.  Also try China Mood, which serves the most authentic Chinese cuisine in all of Oman.  The tea sommelier will surprise you with his acrobatic pouring skills.

Only setback is the lack of a full spa.  If that is a game changer for your trip, try the Six Senses Zighy Bay on the other side of the country for a small wellness retreat.  Either option, however, will show you the very best Oman has to offer.

Travel Tip: Hitlist App

When I first heard about Hitlist, I was like, ‘okay cool, another travel flash sale site’, but after spending hours and hours navigating through the app and website, I found out it is definitely not just another Expedia or Kayak. Hitlist is comprised of travel obsessed techies who are scattered about the world from Holland to Sydney to the far reaches of China. Their app aims to inspire travel through incredible photography and amazing flight deals. Users are able to make a list of destinations they would like to travel to and get alerts on great flights based on a specific algorithm they built, they call it “magic”: you tell them where you want to go and they will tell you the best time to get there. Hitlist has also just launched their new web browser, Hitlist Web, and a chrome extension, Wandertab.

Just like Posh Voyage, Hitlist’s entire goal is to make travel easier and inspire their users to find a deal, pack their bags and go. If Hitlist isn’t on your radar yet, now is the time to get yourself acquainted for the next big name in travel flash sales. Download the App on iTunes now!

1. How did you come up this idea?

Gillian Morris and Timo de Winter, two of the founders, first started working together for a hackathon in 2012, which they won. In the summer of 2013, Luka Kladaric joined the team and the project evolved into Hitlist, a mobile platform for consumers to list trips they want to take, and to receive notifications when there are deals to those places.

2. What exactly does Hitlist do?

Hitlist is a mobile platform that allows users to create a list of places they want to go and then we alert them when we find a cheap flight to that location. We also connect to your social network so we find out where your friends have been, where they want to go and where they live, contextualizing your travel.

3. What are your future goals with Hitlist?

Continue to inspire travel! That has always been our #1 goal. We also plan to add more social components to make it easier to connect with friends and continue to find better and more up-to-date deals.

4. You mentioned Hitlist recommends the best time for a traveler to go to one of these destinations, is that based on weather or pricing?

This is based on pricing. We are continually scanning for amazing deals and we let our users know when we find them.

5. How does this benefit a traveler as opposed to looking up flights themselves?

When a traveler is looking for flights themselves they have very fixed search options. If you have a schedule that is at all flexible, it would take hundreds of queries to find the best deals. Hitlist is constantly scanning the Internet for the best deals, weeding out the bad deals and finding the cheapest flights. Once you add a city to your Hitlist, we will watch flights to that city and send you the best deals we find.

6. How would you say you compare to other big Flight Sale websites such as Expedia or Kayak?

Traditional search engines have very strict search options. If you have a very specific travel schedule, then these search engines work well. If you have any flexibility or just know you want to go to Europe this summer, then Hitlist can find you the best deal.

7. What is Wandertab?

Wandertab is our newest product, a chrome extension to inspire travel. Every time you open tab, an amazing photograph appears with a great deal to that location. Pressing refresh is absolutely addicting and finding amazing deals has never been easier.

8. Is there anything else you would want our readers to know?

We also inspire travel on all of our social outlets especially, Instagram: @Hitlistapp and Twitter: Hitlist_app.

Hotel Nacional de Cuba. Havana, Cuba.

The Hotel Nacional de Cuba is a symbol of history, culture and identity for Cuba. Built in 1930, this hotel is the perfect place to begin the Cuban adventure you have been wanting to take since, well, everyone told you it was forbidden.

The gorgeous property sits on top of a hill overlooking the Caribbean Sea in Vedado, the center of Havana.  It also looks over the sparkling Havana Harbor and on to the Malecon and the City.

The Hotel Nacional de Cuba was a wildly popular destination for Americans long before the United States’ embargo with Cuba, and has since also been a hotspot for many famous connoisseurs of the art and science and political worlds, including British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, and many more.

The inside the hotel is not as fabulous as on the outside given the number of decades it has been running with minimal investments into renovations. It is home to 457 rooms and 15 suites including a Presidential Suite with a marvelous view of Havana. Over the years, the hotel has graciously saved small treasures and recorded rooms where famous political, sport and cultural stars have stayed.  Request room 225, and you can stay among the likes of both Mr. Sinatra and Ms. Gardner.

Enjoy a plethora of entertainment options right on the hotel grounds; learn about the mix of cultures that led to Cuba’s own unique culture at the Parisian Cabaret “Cuban, Cubano” This happens every night, so no need to worry about missing this awesome opportunity to find your inner-Cuban.  You can also listen to the musical beats of the Buena Vista Social Club, or take a dip in the original swimming pool where Johnny Weissmuller (commonly known as Tarzan) launched himself from the 2nd story of the hotel.

The Hotel Nacional de Cuba is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well as a National Monument.  You can visit the Hotel’s Hall of Fame, which hosts pictures of famous guests who have stayed in the glorious hotel.

So, when you book your plans to jetset on the Cuban vacation you have always craved, reserve a historical room, soak up the sun (the history and culture, too) and take us with you.
